Marmaray Project Istanbul

Project Background

The idea of a railway tunnel under the Istanbul Strait was first raised in 1860. However, where the tunnel under the Istanbul Strait crosses the deepest parts of the Strait, the old-fashioned techniques would not allow the tunnel to be on or under the seabed, and therefore the design indicated a "floating" type of tunnel placed on pillars constructed on the seabed.

Such ideas developed further during the following decades, and a similar design was developed in 1902 also showing a railway tunnel under the Istanbul Strait, but this design indicates a tunnel placed on the seabed. Since then, several different ideas have been tested and new te

Private and public buses are very common. According to the traffic time tables can change. So you may wait 10,15 or 20 minutes for a bus. There’re three kinds of buses: The blue-green buses are privately owned and you pay money to get on. Foreign currency’s not accepted. Akbil
Akbil, the 'smart card', is an electronic travel pass that can be used on all public transport except dolmus and minibuses. You get a 10 per cent discount on fares. Akbils are available for a small refundable deposit (TRL6) from booths at all main bus, sea bus and metro stations. To use it, firmly press the circular metal stud into the socket on the orange machine located next to the driver on buses, or to the left of turnstiles at all metro, light rail, tram and ferry stations.

Dolmus and Minibus -- Getting Around in Istanbul

Dolmus
A dolmus (which means 'full') is basically a shared taxi that sets off once every seat is taken. Ask a fellow passenger how much it is or just watch what everyone else is paying. Dolmus run later than buses, oft
